Semi-thru-body printed quartz: how ours is made, and why we still recommend mitered edge

When people first hear the words "printed quartz," they often picture a photograph of marble sitting on top of a plain white slab. That is a fair description of some printed surfaces, but it is not how the printed quartz on our floor is made. We covered how printed quartz works in general in an earlier journal post, Printed quartz: what to know before you choose it. This one is about the specific kind we carry. Every printed quartz at CRS is semi-thru-body, and that one detail changes how the stone looks, how it wears, and how you should plan its edges.

What "semi-thru-body" actually means

A basic printed slab is one flat color with a pattern printed on the very top, like ink on paper. Semi-thru-body quartz is built in two stages instead. First the slab itself is engineered with a base body that already carries color and movement, much the way traditional quartz is manufactured, and that body is shaped to line up with the pattern that is coming next. Then the detailed veining is printed over that prepared base. Because the body underneath was built to match the print, the pattern reads as though it continues down into the stone rather than stopping at the surface. That is the "thru-body" part. The "semi" is the honest half of the name: the finest printed detail still lives on top, so the effect runs deep, but not the way it does in a traditional quartz or a natural stone.

Why it looks better than plain printed quartz

The payoff shows up exactly where plain printed slabs give themselves away: at a chip, a cut edge, or a corner. On a flat printed slab, any break in the surface drops straight to a plain solid color and the illusion falls apart. On semi-thru-body quartz, the matching base body carries the color and general movement past the surface, so a small nick or a cut edge keeps reading as part of the same stone instead of a stripe of blank filler. You still get everything quartz is known for along the way: non-porous, stain resistant, and no sealing to keep up with.

Why we still recommend a mitered edge

Semi-thru-body is a real step up, but we want to be straight with you: it still will not match natural stone or a traditional full-bodied quartz at the edge. In natural stone the veins genuinely run through the block, and in traditional quartz the color is mixed through the whole slab, so a raw edge on either one looks like the top. Printed quartz keeps its finest detail on the surface no matter how well the body is matched, so a plain squared edge will always read a little softer than the face. The fix your fabricator can build is a mitered edge, which folds the printed face down the side so the full pattern wraps the corner. On a waterfall island or a thick apron, that is the difference between convincing and almost. It is why we point people toward a miter on printed quartz.

The compromise, put plainly

Here is the trade, honestly. If you love a specific dramatic vein and you want it to repeat perfectly across a large kitchen, printed quartz gives you that in a way natural stone never can, and semi-thru-body construction makes it hold up far better at the edges than the printed slabs most people have seen. If a mitered edge is not in the plan, a squared edge on semi-thru-body quartz is a good compromise, better than any flat printed surface, though a miter is still where it looks its best. Either way you keep quartz's easy, non-porous daily life. Printed quartz is also UV sensitive, so like all of them it belongs indoors and away from constant direct sun.
