Quartz vs. quartzite: one letter apart, and not the same thing at all
Of everything people ask us on the floor, this comes up most: is quartzite just the natural version of quartz? It's a fair question, and the answer is no: they're different materials with different origins that happen to have collided in the naming. Understanding the difference takes about five minutes and will save you from a surface that doesn't suit how you live.
One is quarried, the other is manufactured
Quartzite is a natural stone. It began as sandstone, then heat and pressure deep in the earth fused those grains into something far harder. It's cut from a quarry as a block, sliced into slabs, and what you see is what the earth made: veining, movement, variation across a single slab and between one slab and the next.
Quartz, sold under brand names you'll recognise, is engineered. Crushed natural quartz is combined with resins and pigments and formed into slabs. It is a genuinely good product, and we stock a great deal of it. But it's manufactured to a specification, which is exactly its appeal: the slab you approve looks like the slab you receive, and the one beside it matches.
What that difference means day to day
Because quartzite is natural stone, it has some porosity, so it typically wants sealing, and how often depends enormously on the specific stone. It also generally handles heat better than engineered quartz, whose resin content is the limiting factor. That doesn't make either one bulletproof: we'd tell anyone to use a trivet on any surface rather than test it.
Engineered quartz is non-porous, so it doesn't need sealing at all, and it's highly consistent. The trade-off is heat sensitivity and, for some people, that the pattern repeats in a way natural stone never does. Neither is better. They're different answers to different priorities.
The labelling problem worth knowing about
Here's the part that matters most, and the reason we'd rather you hear it from us. Not everything sold as "quartzite" in the wider market is quartzite. Some stones marketed that way are actually dolomitic marble or a softer stone that resembles quartzite to the eye but behaves very differently: it can etch when it meets something acidic, which true quartzite generally does not.
This isn't usually anybody being dishonest. Trade names travel with a stone from the quarry and stick to it. But it does mean that if a stone's performance is genuinely important to your project, the name on the tag isn't the whole story, and anyone who tells you a stone is guaranteed to behave a certain way is overpromising.
What we can do is tell you what we know about a specific slab: where it came from, what we've seen it do, and be candid where we're not certain. That honesty is worth more to you than a confident answer that turns out to be wrong two years into owning it.
Choosing between them
If you want a surface with genuine geological character, where no two kitchens will ever look the same, and you don't mind a maintenance routine, quartzite rewards that. If consistency and low upkeep matter more than one-of-one character (a rental, a busy family kitchen, a project where predictability wins), engineered quartz makes a lot of sense.
Plenty of homes use both: quartzite on the island where it's seen, quartz on the perimeter where it works hardest. That's not a compromise; it's just using each material where it's strongest.
